2 a.m. – Red parking lot at Texas Stadium opens for implosion viewing. $25 parking charge.

7 a.m. – Casey Rogers, 11, of Terrell pushes the button that triggers the implosion.

The goal is to strip the stadium to its bare essentials to make the recycling of steel and concrete easier. About 95 percent of the concrete will be ground up and used as base material for adjacent road projects. Nearly all the steel can be sold to recycling firms.

Dykon, based in Tulsa, Okla., will use dynamite to blast one of the basement columns to test the amount of explosives needed. About 2,200 holes will be drilled in stadium supports and filled with about 2,200 to 2,500 pounds of explosives.

Dynamite will be used to collapse the concrete pillars, many of which are already peppered with holes drilled for that purpose. A more powerful explosive designed to shear metal will be used for the roof truss. Those “linear-shaped charges” are also used for separating multistage rockets and in the oil industry, said Redyke.
