When I hear or see the number 88, my initial thought is not Dez Bryant or Michael Irvin; it’s Drew Pearson. Drew Pearson has always been my benchmark receiver. I loved watching him play. To this day, 88 is still my favorite jersey number. When I was kid, my friends all wanted to be Roger Staubach or Tony Dorsett when we played football. There was no doubt that I would always be Drew Pearson.
There always seemed to be a perfect symmetry to it all back in the 70’s. The Cowboys arch rivals were the Steelers and they had an amazing receiver named Lynn Swann who wore #88 as well. They played some all-time great games but win or lose, the Cowboys were America’s Team. They were the good guys – and Drew Pearson was a big part of the reason why.
Playing for the Cowboys from 1973-83, Pearson had 489 catches for 7,822 yards and 48 touchdowns. Pearson made some of the most spectacular and memorable catches in the history of the franchise. Drew Pearson made you want to root for the Cowboys. Because of guys like him, I always will.
So when I read yesterday that Pearson could very well be the next player inducted into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor, I was happy to say the least. It’s been 29 years since Pearson played. I guess sometimes good things do come to those who wait.
