Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware’s dominating performance has earned him a top 10 spot on NFL Network’s top 100 players list of 2012.
Ware came in 6th behind N.Y. Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis (5), Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (4), Lions receiver Calvin Johnson (3), Saints quarterback Drew Brees (2), and Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (1).
In 2011, Ware fell just a half a sack shy (19.5) of his best season in 08 when he recorded 20 sacks. After his rookie season in 05, Ware has recorded double-digit sacks for six straight seasons. The All-Pro outside linebacker will be heading into his 8th season with a career total of 99.5 sacks. The number 200 remains at the top of the sack leading mountain held by Hall of Famer Bruce Smith, two ahead of Reggie White who finished his Hall of Fame career with 198.
Should Ware not fall into the lap of being an injury prone player, Ware could potentially get within striking distance of the record? But Ware is not alone. Minnesota’s defensive end Jared Allen currently has six more sacks than Ware with 105. John Abraham is the only active player that has more career sacks than Ware and Allen with 112. But Abraham is 34 years of age, four years up on Allen and Ware.
To climb the Mountain Bruce Smith stands on is about as high as Football’s Mount Everest. But for now, the number 6 is a high number for Ware to receive out of respect for his tremendous athletic ability. Enough said, Beware of Ware.
Thoughts on Ware being ranked 6th on the top 100 players list of 2012?
